Visp - Visperterminen
The Heidaweg is a themed trail roughly eight kilometres long with an elevation gain of 742 metres from Visp towards Visperterminen. It zigzags through the wine terraces of one of the highest vineyards in Europe. You pass 17 information boards offering many interesting facts about wines, grape varieties, forms of cultivation, farming methods, the country and its people. The best-known grape variety is the golden-coloured Heida, which grows on the nutrient-poor soil along the hiking trail. The first vineyards were first planted here in Celtic times. It is only possible for wine to be grown at such altitudes thanks to the heat-retaining properties of the hand-built dry-stone walls. When you reach the end of the nature trail at the “Bächji” PostBus stop, the St. Jodern winery in Visperterminen is just a ten-minute walk along the road.
